Heartland Capital
Product Manager
Product lead on a rent-to-own contract and approval platform — from configuring a building and pricing it with a complex calculator, through a structured, multi-stage approval workflow.
Context & problem
Heartland Capital needed to manage rent-to-own contracts end to end. A customer picks the building they want — like a carport — and the monthly payment is calculated from inputs like term length and creditworthiness.
Underneath was a messy, ad-hoc approval process. The core product challenge was putting structure into it: defining the stages, the actions required at each one, and what had to happen for a contract to progress.
What I did
- Drove discovery, wrote requirements, owned all UX, and led delivery as product lead.
- Designed a fairly complex pricing calculator that derived monthly payments from term length, creditworthiness, and other inputs.
- Defined the approval workflow from a messy process — mapping stages, the actions needed at each, and the rules for progressing to the next.
- Designed an applicant-facing status site where customers could track progress and upload documents like a driver's license.
Outcome & impact
- Turned a messy, manual approval process into a clearly structured, multi-stage workflow.
- Gave applicants self-service visibility and document upload, reducing back-and-forth.
